Former Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara will transfer to Iowa after losing his starting position.
Cade McNamara, a former quarterback for Michigan, plans to attend Iowa. Following his entry into the transfer portal at the beginning of the week, McNamara made the announcement on Twitter on Thursday.
Due to his performance as the team’s starter in 2021, when Michigan won the Big Ten championship and made an appearance in the College Football Playoff, Cade McNamara was regarded as one of the best players available.
During fall camp and the beginning of the season, he and current Michigan starter J.J. McCarthy fought it out before McCarthy, a former five-star prospect, claimed the job in September. In 2022, McNamara only participated in three games for Michigan before suffering a knee injury against UConn in Week 4 that necessitated surgery and forced him to miss the rest of the season. 3,181 throwing yards, 21 touchdowns, and seven interceptions over 21 games made up his final Wolverines career totals.
In the previous two seasons, Iowa has had difficulty putting together a potent pass attack, but McNamara’s addition could increase the potential of the entire offence. He was a four-star prospect out of Reno High School in Nevada, and 247Sports ranked him as the eighth best pro-style quarterback in his recruiting class.
In 14 games in 2021, Cade McNamara threw for 2,576 yards, 15 touchdowns, and six interceptions as Michigan won its first outright Big Ten championship since 2004 and qualified for the College Football Playoff for the first time. In a season that was cut short by COVID-19 restrictions, he established himself as the Wolverines’ starter in 2020, passing for 425 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions.
His 15 passing touchdowns in 2021 placed him sixth among quarterbacks for the Big Ten. During that season, Cade McNamara finished sixth in passer rating and fourth in the Big Ten in terms of completion percentage (64.2%).
The Big Ten championship game between Michigan and Purdue will take place on Saturday night.
