Swami Vivekananda: Vivekananda, originally known as Narendranath Datta, was an Indian Hindu spiritual leader and reformer who worked to bring together Eastern spirituality and Western technological advancement, believing that the two complemented and augmented one another (born January 12, 1863, Calcutta [now Kolkata]—died July 4, 1902, close to Calcutta).

He was raised in a Kayastha (scribes) upper-middle-class Bengali family and had his education at a university in the Western academic tradition, where he was exposed to Western philosophy, science, and Christianity.
Vivekananda’s ideas on social reform began to take center stage, and he joined the Brahmo Samaj (Society of Brahma), a group committed to ending child marriage and illiteracy as well as promoting education for women and members of lower castes.
Later, he rose to prominence as Ramakrishna’s most illustrious disciple, proving the fundamental similarity of all religions.
Vivekananda tried to inject vigour into Hindu thought, placing less emphasis on the prevalent pacifism, and presenting Hindu spirituality to the West. He did this by consistently emphasizing the universal and humanistic side of the Vedas, the oldest sacred texts of Hinduism, as well as the belief in service rather than dogma.
He served as a catalyst for the effort in the United States and England to further Vedanta philosophy, one of the six schools of Indian philosophy. He represented Hinduism in the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago in 1893, captivating the audience to the point where a newspaper article referred to him as “an orator by divine right and unquestionably the greatest figure at the Parliament.”
After that, he gave lectures around England and the United States, converting many to the Vedanta movement.
At the monastery of Belur Math on the Ganges (Ganga) River close to Calcutta, Vivekananda started the Ramakrishna Mission upon his return to India in 1897 with a small number of Western disciples (now Kolkata).
His values were self-improvement and service, which the order continued to emphasis. Even though he only lived for two years of the 20th century, he made the highest ideals of the Vedantic faith relevant to it and left his mark on both the East and the West.

After graduating from the State Board/Council of Secondary/Higher Secondary, Madrasah Education, and State University in the current academic year, West Bengal residents who are Minority Students of Post Madhyamik Levels and Above in Regular Courses, Including Polytechnic Courses, may apply for this scholarship (SVMCM for Minorities), subject to other eligibility requirements as stated below.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be West Bengal residents who have been enrolled in West Bengal-based institutions for continuing study.
- Applicants must continue their education in West Bengali educational institutions after graduating from the West Bengal State Board, Council of Secondary/Higher Secondary, Madrasah Education, and State University in the current academic year.
- Students must be members of a minority group, such as a Muslim, Christian, Sikh, Buddhist, Parsee, or Jain.
- A family’s annual income cannot exceed Rs. 2.5 lakhs (Certificate to be issued by any gazetted Officer not below the rank of Joint BDO).
