The jury returned a verdict of guilty for him on all three counts.
Following a disagreement, Megan exited the vehicle they were riding in and asserted that Lanez had shot her in the foot.
In the 2020 shooting of Megan Thee Stallion outside a party in Los Angeles, rapper Tory Lanez was found guilty on all counts by a jury.
The two left a party at Kylie Jenner’s house in 2020, and the Grammy-winning rapper claimed Lanez shot her in the foot. The rapper Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, denied shooting the woman and devoted an entire album to disputing Megan Thee Stallion’s account of what happened.
He was initially charged with assault with a semiautomatic firearm and carrying an unlicensed, loaded weapon while operating a motor vehicle. The prosecution added the charge of carelessly firing a firearm earlier this month. Lanez could spend as much as 22 years and 8 months in prison. After serving his term, he could be transported back to his native Canada.
The jury reached a verdict after seven hours of deliberation. After the decision, Lanez was arrested right away.
On January 27, there will be a sentencing hearing.
Megan Thee Stallion has been praised for her “bravery” by Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón in a statement issued after the judgment.
Despite numerous horrifying attacks that you did not deserve, you showed amazing courage and vulnerability in your testimony, he added. “You have served as an example to women all around Los Angeles County and the country.
You suffered unwarranted and repulsive scrutiny that no woman should ever have to face.”
“The jury got it correctly,” Megan Thee Stallion’s attorney Alex Spiro said in a statement. I’m glad Meg has received justice.
When police pulled over an SUV in the Hollywood Hills carrying two people and two others in July 2020, the case got started. Megan Thee Stallion, whose true name is Megan Jovon Ruth Pete, admitted in court that when questioned why her feet were bleeding, she initially claimed to have cut them on glass.
After being transported by EMS to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, physicians discovered bullet fragments in her foot that needed to be surgically removed.
“I couldn’t walk for a long,” she admitted in court. I still have nerve damage. My left foot’s side seems numb to me. Even though the backs of my feet are always painful, I keep going.
Weeks after the incident, she openly admitted on Instagram that she had been shot, and she later named Lanez as the assailant. In the song “Shots Fired,” she afterward fired shots at him.
Megan Thee Stallion testified that Lanez promised her $1 million in exchange for her silence on the shooting.
Megan Thee Stallion explained that she had initially lied to police because she was afraid of getting into a more dangerous scenario in an interview with Gayle King in April, prior to the trial.
You think I’m going to call the police and say that we Black people have a gun in the car, right? You want me to inform the authorities that we have a pistol in the car so they can kill us all, right?
Lanez declined to give a defense witness testimony. Sean Kelly, a local witness who had heard two ladies fighting the night of the shooting, had been summoned by his counsel to testify in court about the incident.
Variety reports that Kelly admitted during his testimony that he observed two ladies fighting, but that he also witnessed what seemed to be many bullets come from a male who was “shooting everywhere.”
Jurors also heard a recording of a September interview with Kelsey Harris, a former acquaintance of Megan Thee Stallion, in which Harris described the fight between the two rappers in great detail.
Prior to the video being played in court, Harris, who was also in the SUV, stated that she was unable to recollect many specifics of the shooting, but that she had provided detailed descriptions of the evening during her interview with the prosecution.
According to Rolling Stone, Harris claimed in the recorded conversation that she overheard the two arguing before the shooting about their “artistry” and professions. According to her, Megan Thee Stallion was leaving the SUV after Lanez had ordered the women to get out when the first shots were fired.
Harris informed the prosecution, “He’s shooting over the top of the door.” “He was firing the revolver while leaning over the front passenger door,” the witness said.
