After children in the UK perished from the infection known as Strep A, health officials advise parents to be aware of it.
What are the signs and symptoms of Strep A? How dangerous is it? What diseases does it cause?
There are greater opportunities for illnesses like these to spread after Covid limitations were loosened. Over the past few weeks, there have been more cases.
The highly contagious bacteria that causes the infection can cause significant disease and problems, even though the majority of people do not get very sick.
After getting strep A in the UK over the past several days, some children there tragically lost their lives. One of these kids has been identified as Hanna Roap, a 7-year-old student at Penarth’s Victoria Primary School.
There are various names for Strept A. It is frequently referred to as group A streptococcus bacterium, although GAS can also be used to refer to it as streptococcus pyogenes.
Scarlet fever is frequently mentioned in relation to strep A. One of the illnesses that the strep A bacteria can cause is scarlet fever, but the bacteria can also be the cause of other illnesses.
What is Strep A?
It’s a bacteria that can occasionally be detected on the skin or in the throat.
Many people unknowingly carry it around with no symptoms, but they can spread it to other people and get them sick.
How can you get it?
Close touch and coughs and sneezes can spread it to people.
Schools and nursing facilities are two areas where outbreaks can occasionally occur.
What are the symptoms?
The majority of the time, symptoms are minor, such as a sore throat or a skin infection that is readily cured with antibiotics.
However, there are a variety of things that Strep A can induce, some of which are more serious.
One such condition is scarlet fever, which again primarily affects young children and calls for antibiotics.
Is “Strep A” dangerous?
Rarely, invasive group A streptococcal infection, or iGAS, can be brought on by streptococcus a.
This might be fatal.
When the bacteria overcome your body’s immunological defenses, invasive illness results, this may occur if you already have a disease or are taking medications that weaken your immune system, such as some cancer treatments.
Among the warning signals of invasive disease are:
- fever (a high temperature above 38C)
- acute muscular pain
- Early, urgent medical assistance is crucial.
“Anyone with a high fever, severe muscle aches, pain in one area of the body, and unexplained vomiting or diarrhea should call NHS 111 and seek medical help immediately,” the UK Health Security Agency advises.
What other diseases can strep A cause?
Scarlet fever is not the only illness that strep A can cause, claims Public Health Wales. This typically manifests as “strep throat,” a moderate sore throat, and skin or soft tissue infections like impetigo and cellulitis.
More uncommon side effects of strep A are possible. These include post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis and acute rheumatic fever (heart and kidney diseases caused by an immune reaction to the bacteria).
Also known as iGAS (invasive group A streptococcus) infections, streptococcus A can result in invasive severe infections. In order to educate parents about iGAS, Public Health Wales is currently collaborating with Victoria Primary School.
