This week, singer-songwriter Carly Simon lost both of her sisters, and she is mourning.
Both of singer Carly Simon’s sisters, composer Lucy and opera singer Joanna, passed away in the same week.
Joanna Simon, a former opera soprano, passed away from thyroid cancer on Wednesday at the age of 84, and on Thursday, Broadway composer Lucy Simon passed away at age 82 from breast cancer.
All three siblings, who were born into wealth as the children of Simon & Schuster publisher Richard Simon in New York City in the 1940s, were successful in their careers as professional musicians.
In the 1960s, Lucy Simon began her musical career by performing with Carly in Provincetown and Greenwich Village, Massachusetts.
Based on Eugene Field’s children’s 1889 children’s poem, the duo recorded Wynken, Blynken & Nod in 1964 under the name Simon Sisters.
The former nursing school graduate began making albums as a solo artist in the middle of the 1970s. Together with her husband David Levine, Simon co-produced two Grammy Award-winning children’s albums, In Harmony:
A Sesame Street Record from 1981 and Harmony 2 from 1983.
The Secret Garden, a well-known Broadway musical, was written by Lucy in 1991, and it received a Tony Award nomination for best original score. Years later, she composed the music for the Broadway production of Doctor Zhivago, the epic novel by Boris Pasternak.
Joanna Simon, 84, became well-known in the opera world thanks to an almost 25-year performance and concert career.
The mezzo-soprano made her debut at the New York City Opera in 1962 as Cherubino in Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro, and in 1972 she sang the title role in Thomas Pasatieri’s Black Widow, which had its world premiere at the Seattle Opera.
